Can Chiropractic help with Migraine?
There are thousands of research papers on the various migraines and it’s a complex field but in general our patients just want to know if we can help them. Can we help? - anecdotally - yes we can in many cases.
Here are a couple of things to consider if you are struggling with migraines in our experience:
- Musculoskeletal alignment: Chronic misalignments/dysfunction of the neck or upper back vertebrae will lead to asymmetric tension of neck musculature. Over time this tension contributes to reduced range of motion, tightness and often headaches. Be aware though that neck misalignments may stem from lower down the spine - sometimes even as low as the sacrum (tailbone).Stress: Does stress worsen your episodes? If so, its probably because stress increases the tension referred to above.
- Dental: Impacted wisdom teeth, very old or degraded amalgam fillings, unsatisfactory root canals or TMJ (jaw) alignment can all contribute to migraines in our experience. We can often help identify the offending teeth.
- Piercings: Upper ear, nose or tongue/lip piercings can also exacerbate migraines in our experience.
There are very few studies that confirm the usefulness or otherwise of chiropractic manipulation for migraine but this recent Randomised Controlled Trial did find that MCC (manipulative chiropractic care) in addition to what it called EUC (enhanced usual care) was better than EUC alone.
